If you’ve read this blog previously, or seen me in person, you know that I love to eat. And even better than just eating is eating really fantastic food.
This is a great shot of Christa & Davide
by Stacy Zarin of Baltimoremagazine.net.
If you visited Boothbay Harbor, say between 2005 and 2009, you probably had the good fortune of eating at Ports of Italy when it was Christa & Davide’s show. These guys made really fantastic food. Not only was Davide an excellent chef, and Christa the consummate Maître d’, but they were two really phenominal people that you wanted to be around.
They introduced me to Bresaola, which soon became my absolute favorite appetizer in the whole-wide world. In case you haven’t had it, it’s thin slices of air cured beef with shaved celery, arugula salad and fried goat cheese balls tossed about. Bold, savory, sharp. It was like “Roxanne” for your mouth. Another favorite was Davide’s “Angello del Ré”, which was a rack of lamb sautéed in Sambucca with a Cranberry Demi Glace. Yup. You heard right.
Well, they’ve left us for the big city. . . Gone home to where they met and were married. Gone back to Baltimore, MD. They now own and operate the Pazza Lune, which is an extremely well-reviewed Italian Restaurant. Of course it’s well-reviewed, with a team like that.
And when you’re lucky enough to have a prize-winning pair in your town you try to keep them as long as you can. I just would like to have kept them here a little bit longer.
But change is good. Sante Calandri is the new owner, and is poised to start his second year as Executive and Maître d’ of Ports of Italy in a few weeks . . . After a really successful first year, we are all psyched to have him come back up from New York.
Sante has taken some of the best recipes that Davide offered, added some of his personal favorites from his years of experience, and has come up with an exceptional menu that really says Northern Italian. I can’t wait to see him again this year.
The Pazza Luna is located at 1401 E. Clement St., Baltimore MD 21230-5205 and you call them at 410.962.1212 for a reservation. When you see them, and they will come out to greet you, tell them that Michael & Susan miss them a lot.
